SUMMARY:July: four evenings of cinema under the stars at the CSAC
DESCRIPTION:As part of the “L’estate degli incontri” programme at the Centre for Communication Studies and Archives\, Richard Linklater’s “Before Trilogy” and Luca Guadagnino’s “Call Me by Your Name” \n\n\nFour films spanning different stages of life\, following characters as they discover themselves\, lose their way and find each other again: in July\, the ‘L’estate degli incontri’ film series at the University of Parma’s Centre for Communication Studies and Archives will present Richard Linklater’s ‘Before Trilogy’\, comprising *Before Sunrise* (Prima dell’alba) and *Before Midnight (Prima del tramonto)\, concluding with Luca Guadagnino’s Call Me by Your Name. \nFour screenings to rediscover films that tell the stories of encounters destined to leave their mark and of loves born of words\, desire\, anticipation and time spent together. Four films that span different stages of life\, following characters who discover themselves\, lose their way and find each other again on a cinematic journey through unforgettable dialogue\, authentic emotions and moments destined to remain in the memory. \nThe programme is organised in collaboration with Cinema D’Azeglio Società cooperativa. \nThe films will be shown in their original language with Italian subtitles. \nScreenings at 9.30 pm. \nAdmission is free. \nProgramme \n9 July\, at 9.30 pm \nBefore Sunrise\, Richard Linklater\, 1995 \nOn a train bound for Vienna\, Jesse and Céline meet by chance. They decide to spend the night together before parting at dawn. Through walks\, confessions and endless conversations\, an unexpected bond develops that will change the way they see the world forever. \n16 July\, at 9.30 pm \nBefore Sunset (Prima del tramonto)\, Richard Linklater\, 2004 \nNine years after they first met\, Jesse and Céline meet up again in Paris. They have just a few hours to spend together before parting ways once more. The time that has passed\, the missed opportunities and the feelings they have never forgotten resurface in an intense and surprising conversation. \n23 July\, at 9.30 pm \nBefore Midnight (Prima di mezzzanotte)\, Richard Linklater\, 2013 \nAlmost twenty years on\, Jesse and Céline are still together. On holiday in Greece\, their relationship is put to the test by the challenges of adult life\, amid desires\, compromises and new questions about love. The final chapter in one of the most famous love stories in contemporary cinema. \n30 July\, at 9.30 pm \nCall Me by Your Name\, directed by Luca Guadagnino\, 2017 \nSummer 1983. In the Lombardy countryside\, 17-year-old Elio meets Oliver\, a young scholar staying with his family. Amidst sunny days\, music\, reading and new discoveries\, an intense bond develops\, destined to become one of the most memorable love stories in contemporary cinema. \nFrom 8 pm\, the CSAC courtyard comes to life with ‘Cinema e Cocomeri’\, organised by the Avis Cortile San Martino Association\, the festival’s refreshment area: fresh watermelon\, drinks\, aperitifs and a chance to get together and enjoy the summer evenings at the Abbey. \n\n\n\nDownload the postcard

SUMMARY:MUST: all the charm of restoring wax sculptures
DESCRIPTION:Maria Grazia Cordua working on an 18th-century anatomical statue in the museum’s Wunderkammer. \nWatching her at work is fascinating\, to say the least. Listening to her talk about her work – and the passion she puts into it – is\, if possible\, even more so. The restorer Maria Grazia Cordua is currently at the University’s Museum of Natural History – MUST: she is working on an 18th-century anatomical wax statue (attributed to Andrea Corsi\, School of Clemente Susini; ‘Lorenzo Tenchini’ Biomedicine Collection) which\, together with another\, is displayed in the Wunderkammer\, the first room visitors encounter on their tour of the museum. \nShe is from Florence (she trained at the Opificio delle Pietre Dure) and is one of the few people specialising in this type of restoration. She has previously worked for the University of Parma\, specifically for the Botanical Garden\, on the restoration of several specimens from the precious collection of wax fungi donated by Maria Luigia of Austria to the University in 1819 – a masterpiece of wax modelling of the highest artistic and scientific value. \nVisitors to the MUST at the moment will find her at work in the first room. “This work was already restored in Florence in 2012 and is therefore in good condition\,” she explains\, “but since then it has been moved a few times and\, until recently\, was kept in a different environment to its current one\, so some minor damage had occurred. Two muscle bands had come away\, a few small cracks had appeared\, and so on.” \nHow do you go about restoring these pieces? “The first stage\,” he explains\, “is cleaning. Then comes consolidation: resin is injected into the cracks using a syringe\, and then the gaps are filled and repairs made using wax\, which is very different from the original beeswax. The new waxes deteriorate much less and are far more elastic.’ The tools used are also different\, allowing for highly precise work with the wax applied at the correct temperature. The little ‘wax heater’ used years ago is now just a memory. ‘The final step is the finishing touches\, which are applied with a brush.’ \nHer words highlight the importance of research into materials\, which\, she emphasises\, ‘stems from study\, from the work itself\, and from discussions with colleagues’. Which restoration project is closest to her heart? ‘The botanical wax models at the Museo della Specola in Florence. It’s the collection I’ve been most passionate about\,’ concludes Maria Grazia Cordua\, ‘not least because\, on and off\, I’ve worked on it for more than twenty years.’
