SUMMARY:MARIA LUIGIA’S GIFT. Support the restoration of a forgotten treasure
DESCRIPTION:SUPPORT THE PROJECT\nART BONUS \n“Il dono di Maria Luigia” is an Art Bonus project promoted by the Ministry of Culture\, a permanent tax scheme established to encourage financial support for public cultural heritage. Donations made to this project\, intended for restoration\, maintenance and enhancement work\, entitle businesses and professionals to a tax credit equal to 65% of the amount donated. \nIndividuals\, non-commercial organisations and businesses may support the project. Donations made entitle the donor to a tax credit equal to 65% of the amount donated\, to be spread over three annual instalments.\nFor individuals and non-commercial organisations\, the benefit is limited to 15% of taxable income\, whilst for businesses it is limited to 5‰ of annual turnover.\nPayments must be made using traceable payment methods\, in accordance with current legislation. \nFor more information\, click here. \nTHE COLLECTION\nIn 1819\, Marie Louise of Austria donated a splendid collection of wax fungi to the University\, comprising over a hundred specimens of great artistic and scientific value. It is a unique collection\, invaluable for mycological study and identification thanks to its faithful reproduction of details\, dimensions and colours. For over a century\, the city of Parma has been unable to appreciate the Duchess’s gift\, which remained hidden from the public for a long time.\nTime has taken its toll on the materials and the original craftsmanship\, making a conservation restoration essential to restore Marie Louise’s mushrooms to their former glory. The restoration of the collection will allow it to be returned to the city\, two centuries after the donation\, enriching its accessible heritage. \nWHERE TO FIND IT\nOnce the restoration is complete\, the Museum of Natural History will house part of the collection within the section dedicated to Marie Louise’s Cabinet of Sciences. The remaining fungi will be housed at the Botanical Museum\, which will open at the Botanical Gardens\, displaying a selection of historical materials produced or preserved by the city of Parma over the course of more than five centuries. \nWHY SAVE IT?\nWax modelling\, the art form behind this collection\, has an intriguing history. Originating within the tradition of votive offerings\, its techniques soon extended to human anatomy and botany. The short lifespan of wax has\, over time\, had two contrasting effects. SUMMARY:MUST: all the charm of restoring wax sculptures
DESCRIPTION:Maria Grazia Cordua working on an 18th-century anatomical statue in the museum’s Wunderkammer. \nWatching her at work is fascinating\, to say the least. Listening to her talk about her work – and the passion she puts into it – is\, if possible\, even more so. The restorer Maria Grazia Cordua is currently at the University’s Museum of Natural History – MUST: she is working on an 18th-century anatomical wax statue (attributed to Andrea Corsi\, School of Clemente Susini; ‘Lorenzo Tenchini’ Biomedicine Collection) which\, together with another\, is displayed in the Wunderkammer\, the first room visitors encounter on their tour of the museum. \nShe is from Florence (she trained at the Opificio delle Pietre Dure) and is one of the few people specialising in this type of restoration. She has previously worked for the University of Parma\, specifically for the Botanical Garden\, on the restoration of several specimens from the precious collection of wax fungi donated by Maria Luigia of Austria to the University in 1819 – a masterpiece of wax modelling of the highest artistic and scientific value. \nVisitors to the MUST at the moment will find her at work in the first room. “This work was already restored in Florence in 2012 and is therefore in good condition\,” she explains\, “but since then it has been moved a few times and\, until recently\, was kept in a different environment to its current one\, so some minor damage had occurred. Two muscle bands had come away\, a few small cracks had appeared\, and so on.” \nHow do you go about restoring these pieces? “The first stage\,” he explains\, “is cleaning. Then comes consolidation: resin is injected into the cracks using a syringe\, and then the gaps are filled and repairs made using wax\, which is very different from the original beeswax. The new waxes deteriorate much less and are far more elastic.’ The tools used are also different\, allowing for highly precise work with the wax applied at the correct temperature. The little ‘wax heater’ used years ago is now just a memory. ‘The final step is the finishing touches\, which are applied with a brush.’ \nHer words highlight the importance of research into materials\, which\, she emphasises\, ‘stems from study\, from the work itself\, and from discussions with colleagues’. Which restoration project is closest to her heart? ‘The botanical wax models at the Museo della Specola in Florence. It’s the collection I’ve been most passionate about\,’ concludes Maria Grazia Cordua\, ‘not least because\, on and off\, I’ve worked on it for more than twenty years.’

SUMMARY:Researchers’ Night: events at museums and collections
DESCRIPTION:The University Museum Network is also taking part in Researchers’ Night with a number of events. \nThe MUST – Museum of Natural Historiography is organising an urban tour to discover fossils: “FOSSIL HUNTING! – Urban palaeontology in the city of Parma” \nThe route winds its way from Piazza Ghiaia through the streets of the city centre\, passing by the MUST\, in search of the fossils hidden within the city’s stonework. \nA journey through time and space to identify the remains of animals that inhabited the Earth before humans. \nACCESS\, TIMES AND DURATION: Booking required.\nTwo sessions of 25 people each:\nSession 1: meet at Piazza Ghiaia at 2.15 pm\nSession 2: meet at Piazza Ghiaia at 2.45 pm\nThe tour lasts approximately 1 hour.\nThe event is suitable for everyone.\nLOCATION: starting from Piazza Ghiaia\, in front of the entrance to the ParmaUniverCity Info Point underpass. \nThroughout Friday 25 September\, entry to the MUST is free. \nThe Crystal Chemistry Collection offers guided tours and hands-on experiments with ‘VISION3D: journeys into the nanoworld of crystals through virtual reality and augmented reality’. \nThemed guided tours of the Crystal Chemistry Collection: each tour will focus on an element from the periodic table\, or on a molecule that is important for life and the environment\, exploring the atomic-level structures of materials and their properties. The tours\nwill be followed by experimental activities using virtual reality and augmented reality headsets\, and the analysis of samples under a microscope\nACCESS\, TIMES AND DURATION: Guided tours take place at regular intervals for groups of 10–15 peopl\nNo booking is required.\nDuration of the tour: 30–40 minutes.
