• Subcollections

The first core of palaeontological collections was formed during French rule thanks to Prof. Gian Battista Guidotti, a former professor of Natural Sciences. Later, during the reign of Maria Luigia – also thanks to donations from the Duchess – the most important collections were acquired, such as Bolca’s collection of fossil fish from the Eocene and Cortesi’s collection of Plio-Pleistocene vertebrates, and a large collection of fossil molluscs (around 300 species), also from the Plio-Pleistocene of Piacenza.
The ancient and recent collections mainly include fossil finds of marine invertebrates and vertebrates from the foothills of the Apennines in the Parma and Piacenza areas.
